Actions & Response

The Global HR and IT Leadership team asked Veran to accelerate Pentland’s preparation for cloud HR technology using our Phase Zero methodology. Over a three month period, Veran used leading practice processes and extensive knowledge of HR technology vendors and implementations to support Pentland to:

  1. Set up the appropriate project governance to make decisions and maintain momentum

  2. Define the scope of the system replacement project

  3. Design and agree the future target operating model and global design principles

  4. Design the technical solution ready for modern cloud HR software

  5. Provide benchmark resource and cost information to strengthen and validate the business case#

  6. Identify and focus on the areas of complexity within the global business

  7. Agree the shortlist of appropriate vendors for an accelerated RFP

  8. Define detailed scenarios that will show the real differences between software during the RFP

  9. Design the future state HR processes for the areas that matter, where the most benefit and transformation can be achieved

Veran worked with Sage to create a fully costed, bottom-up business case and plan for deployment globally.  This was requested by the leadership team to independently verify the investment and achieve agreement to the budget so that their global transformation partner could undertake business and back-office transformation.  The business case and plan was required in a 6 week accelerated period and included all aspects of transformation including new business organisation, HR support design and technology deployment.

Deliverables: Fully-costed business case built and signed-off.

Key Outcomes

  • Pentland now have clear understanding and plan for an accelerated selection process which will show the differences between the vendors and focus on the areas that matter to the business; the processes and outcomes that will have the biggest impact.

  • Phase Zero has laid the foundation for modernising HR and given the team a head start on replacing their HR system. When the selected vendor demands key design decisions and data, the project team will be ready with answers that have been fully considered and agreed globally. This preparation will increase the success, value and speed of their implementation.

“Now we have been through a Phase Zero I’ve been really impressed and completely understand the value in it. This helps us accelerate and get more value for money when we start the main project. It is a scary thought that if we didn’t do this, the first time we all would have come together would be in front of the vendors who expect answers we would not have thought through!”

– Simon Watt, Global Organisational Development Director
